By 2050 there is predicted to be more plastic in the ocean than fish (estimated by the Ellen Aurthur Foundation), 95% of which is derived from land-based sources such as packaging (2017, IUCN). Plastic is responsible for the chocking of millions of birds and creatures in land and on sea every year. Moreover, plastic, by its molecular nature, is known to attract other poisonous molecules which attach themselves to it: Whether it is DDT, mercury or any chemical components from agricultural run-off. As we know, ocean plastics are commonly mistaken as a food source by a myriad of marine creatures, thus contaminating unsuspecting animals and ultimately, because we eat these animals, plastic ends up on our plates too! To add to this, as plastic decomposes (a process which is escalated through ingestion as well as exposure to sun and sea), it is known to leach all manner of harmful toxic chemicals including genetic altering substances and hormone disruptors, thus compromising the quality of precious water even more.
So, what do we do? For one, let’s choose to spend our heard earned cash at restaurants and vendors that support our planets and its oceans too. Our Ocean Friendly Restaurant program is adapted version from Surf Rider Foundation which believes we can tackle this problem, one restaurant and one customer at a time.
Through this program we wish to encourage local restaurants to be more ocean-compliant and to commend them for doing their bit in giving us the option to choose not only for our own health but for a sustainable ocean too.
Unfortunately, the fish have no choice, but you certainly do!
