Blue Ocean event with heart and soul
It is customary at SA Longboarding Champs not only to surf your heart out but also to live an ocean lifestyle that is mindful of the generations to come. This year was no different with the finals producing some of the best longboarding I have ever seen from U18 right the way up to the Veterans.
To show our love for the oceans we have decided to start a new initiative. This year’s SA Longboard Champs was the first ever ‘BLUE’ event, meaning that all packaging from the food vendors at the event was 100% recyclable and no single-use plastic was supplied. There were no plastic packets, no straws, and no pesky polystyrene! Ocean Pledge partnered with Faithful to Nature to supply metal water bottles for all contestants and judges so there were no single-use plastic water bottles in sight. We hope this becomes a tradition and challenge other surf events to do the same.
Thanks to all of you who participated in the event and signed your Ocean Pledge and joined the #FTNTakeTakeThePlunge campaign!
Soul Surfer Tradition
Last year I was lucky enough to inherit the title of 2017 SOUL SURFER from Steve Sawyer, the oh-so-stylish title holder of this year’s S.A. Longboarding Champs. Well done Steezy, that was one hell of a final!
It has been a life-changing year all round! I would like to thank Fred Kockott from Roving Reporters.za for sponsoring last year SOUL SURFER who, in conjunction with the Human Elephant Foundation and Grindrod Bank provided enormous opportunities into the world of environmental journalism. It is from this that Ocean Pledge was born. I thank you from the bottom of my heart!
Meet the new Soul Surfer 2018
So in keeping with SA Champs Tradition and with the help of GB Surfboards and Faithful to Nature, we were able to present the SOUL SURFER 2018 award to a new ocean-inspired warrior, Dorette Oosthuizen.
Ocean Pledge asked two questions from this year’s entrants, and this was Dorette’s response.
Why is ocean conservation at the top of environmental conservation?
The ocean covers the largest % of the surface area on planet Earth. All the rivers run into the ocean and all the winds travel across its surface. Our bodies are made of around 70% water. In fact, the water in our bodies is saline, just like the ocean. When we respect the ocean we respect each other and ourselves. A respect for our bodies, our internal environment, cultivates a respect for our external environment, nature. The ocean interconnects all the bio-systems on Earth. It provides a home for millions of species and it plays a critical role in the climate and carbon cycles. It also provides us with a playground and provides us with food. Ocean conservation, therefore, has to be on top of the list as without our oceans, in a healthy condition, all life on planet Earth is under threat.
How can you assist Ocean Pledge?
My love and passion for the ocean have been cultivated from a very young age. Fortunate to spend my weekends on the shores of the west coast as my father dived for crayfish, perlemoen, caught snoek, geelbek and all sorts. The ocean was his place of solitude.
Besides for this ocean passion, I bring 7 years of corporate sustainability experience as a strategist, trainer and carbon footprint analyst. The combination of passion and experience enables me to contribute to the team with purpose and focus. As an additional team member, we could cast the Ocean Pledge net even wider, affecting more change and creating a constant swell of awareness and education.
Well Done Dorette Oosthuizen! We have no doubt that you would be a massive asset to our ocean team!
